This One Anyway
I have found that no matter how inspired, compelled, or motivated I am to write, I will invariably try to avoid sitting down to my keyboard. Why?
Reason #1: Writing Is Hard Work.
It might look like it to the guy who builds skyscrapers or the nurse who puts in 12 long hours. But writing is down right hard labor. Although the common image is one of glamour and creative flair, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman explains that “Writing is very hard work . . . although nobody among the laboring ranks, think authors labor.”
Reason#2: I'm Waiting for the Perfect Writing Environment
I can always find an endless number of good reasons why I should postpone my writing. I think to myself, I’ll just get these other projects done so I can really concentrate on my writing. I had better get that load of clothes on to wash, or sweep up those potato chip crumbs off the floor, or start supper or, or, or, ad infinitum.
My rationalizations go beyond the bounds of normal and begin verging on the crazy when I find myself thinking things like, I’d better get those closets cleaned first, and while I'm at it, put on a fresh coat of paint, too before I begin to write.
Believe me, you can spend years trying to get to the perfect situation for writing.
Reason # 3 I Don't Know What's Going to Come Next
I taught it to my high school creative writing students, but I have to remind myself sometimes: if I just get started, the ideas will begin to flow. Laurence Stern said, " I write the first sentence and trust in God for the next."
So I'm going to get back to that sequel I'm working on, Honor at Stake today. Right after lunch. I'll just go toss that load of towels into the dryer first.
